According to the Florida Department of Motor Vehicles, every year there are 250,000 vehicle crashes in Florida. Many of these happen near Miami, West Palm Beach, and Fort Lauderdale. Accidentes De Autos | Car accidents are stressful, and the claim that follows can be confusing to understand, but no matter how severe the accident, the claims process will follow similar steps.
- Contact Your Insurer- Immediately following your accident, you need to make a claim with your auto insurance. Do this by calling your insurer directly. The number is found on your insurance card. You will provide them with information regarding where and when the accident happened, if you were injured, and what condition your car is in. A claims adjuster will be assigned to your case.
- File a Report- Your claims adjuster will ask you to recall the accident and describe the event to him or her in detail. The claims adjuster will repeat this process with all other parties involved in the accident. If the accident caused injuries or if the police were called to the scene, your claims adjuster may contact the police or hospital for any relevant reports or documents.
- Communicate With Insurance Companies- Based on the coverage you carry, your claim will either be handled mainly by your insurance company or by the insurance company of the person at fault. With full-coverage insurance, your insurer will represent you throughout the process. If you are the driver at fault, your insurance will cover the cost of damages for all other parties involved up to your policy’s limit. However, if you carry only minimum coverage and are found at fault you may be forced to deal with the other party’s insurance directly. In this case, you will contact the other party’s insurance and work with their adjuster. This will make you a third party to this insurance company. When carrying full coverage, your insurance provider will work directly with the other party—no matter what the circumstances—and you will not need to contact the other insurance company.
- Negotiate a Settlement- After an investigation into the accident is complete, a settlement will be offered to you. This will cover all or part of the damages and injuries. This may take days or weeks and depends on a variety of factors including severity of the accident, injuries involved, or time associated with processing paperwork.
